| Winter waterfowl at Leverett Pond 1/22/05
Leverett Pond is a widening of the Muddy River on the border of Jamaica Plain and Brookline. During the coldest days of the winter a small portion of the pond remains ice free. Large numbers of waterfowl pack into the open water, among them are a few species not seen during the spring and summer.
On the morning of January 22nd the air temperature was 5-8 degrees farenheit. The differential between air and water temperature was so great that steam poured from the pond like a hot spring. |
